Philodendron hederaceum ‘Micans’, often called the Velvet Leaf Philodendron, is one of the most elegant and beloved tropical trailing plants, prized for its soft, iridescent foliage and forgiving nature. A member of the Araceae family and native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, this variety is a refined form of the classic Heartleaf Philodendron, featuring luxurious, velvety leaves that shimmer in shades of green, bronze, and deep burgundy.

The heart-shaped leaves have a delicate, suede-like texture that catches the light beautifully, giving the plant an almost luminous quality. As it grows, Philodendron Micans produces long, cascading vines, making it perfect for hanging planters, high shelves, or climbing up moss poles. Its rich, jewel-toned foliage and easy-care temperament make it a true statement piece in any indoor collection.

Philodendron hederaceum ‘Micans’ – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light, which enhances its velvety texture and deep colouring. It will tolerate medium light but may lose some of its bronze tones. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.

Watering

Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist, allowing excess water to drain freely. Reduce watering slightly in winter. Philodendron Micans is tolerant of occasional dryness but should never sit in soggy soil.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers warmth, 18–28°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 15°C.

  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity (50–70%) is ideal. Mist occasionally or use a humidifier to maintain leaf softness and prevent crisping.

Soil and Potting

Use a chunky, free-draining aroid mix – peat-free compost blended with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the mix and give roots room to grow.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Trim long vines to encourage bushier growth and remove any yellow or damaged leaves. Pruned cuttings root easily in water or soil, making propagation simple. Wipe leaves gently to remove dust and maintain their velvety appearance.

Growth and Maturity

A fast-growing, trailing or climbing vine that can reach 1–2 metres indoors. The more support and humidity it receives, the larger and lusher the foliage becomes.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Faded colour: Insufficient light.

  • Brown tips: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Pests: Occasionally spider mites or thrips.

Background and Benefits

The Philodendron Micans is a naturally occurring variety of Philodendron hederaceum, prized for its soft, velvet-textured leaves and easy adaptability. Its romantic appearance and forgiving care requirements make it a favourite among collectors and beginners alike. Like all Philodendrons, it helps purify the air, filtering toxins and improving indoor air quality while adding a luxurious touch of tropical greenery.

    The Dog LOVES IT!
I bought this for my ex-wife's Pitbull. He is an aggressive chewer and usually destroys any toy I buy him. But not this one! The ball is small enough and pliable that it gives when he chomps on it. He loves this ball and seems to be his favorite toy. Thank you for making a product that he likes and can't destroy!

    My Golden Retriever’s favorite
We’ve owned lots of toys and balls. This specific version (in blue) has been her absolute favorite. She’s about 72lbs and chews on this thing regularly with no visible damage. We actually own about 6 of them because they have a tendency to go missing underneath furniture and in the yard. We have two of the orange colored ones but she doesn’t like those nearly as much which I assume is because the blue is easier to see in the grass. Other than that…They bounce really well and also whistle a little when you throw them hard enough. I hope they never stop making these.

doesn't whistle as loud as other chuckit balls I've seen, but a good ball.
makes some noise, but I've seen (and played with) others at the dog park that whistle much louder than the 1 I got. all Chuckit balls... so, just this one I'm betting. but it flys good and the dog loves to chase it. he chews it a fair bit as well and the ball has not taken much damage from him (lab mix) or others that have had a go at it. I'll likely buy another at some point ... just wish it was a little louder when flying.

Blue ball, my dog likes blue.
Just a ball right? Evidently not! My dog won’t chase an orange chuck it ball or the glow in the dark ball- only the blue one 🤷🏼‍♀️
